What is Entertaiment?

Entertaiment is a broad category of activities that are used for enjoyment. It can range from a single person selecting private entertainment, to an individual at a banquet, to a family or group of people gathering for a party, to a performance intended for thousands and even a global audience.

The word entertainment derives from the Latin intertenere, from the prefix inter- meaning “inside” and the suffix tenere, which means to hold. The Scheherazade story, for example, has inspired retellings in the form of orchestral works by Rimsky-Korsakov, Ravel and Szymanowski; film by Pasolini and others; and innovative video games.
